Making lung health a priority for Parliaments across the UK
This week we launched an exciting new strategy, name and look for the organisation. To mark the launch our staff and supporters visited parliaments across the UK to put lung health firmly on the political agenda. Jo from our policy team explains why we’re speaking to politicians about our new strategy and how you can help us fight for your right to breathe.
Lung health must be a priority
Lung health is everybody’s problem, yet millions of people with lung conditions still aren’t getting the help they need or deserve.
Poor lung health is the third biggest cause of death in the UK. Too many people breathe toxic air and hospital admissions for lung conditions are rising. Yet there are misconceptions that conditions like asthma, bronchiectasis and COPD are not life-threatening or serious. This is preventing people with a lung condition from getting timely and effective diagnosis and treatment.
Transforming lung health
Our vision is for a world where everyone has healthy lungs. Our bold new strategy and a striking new look will help us to raise awareness of the seriousness of lung conditions and tackle misconceptions. Together with campaigners and politicians, we called on national decision-makers to do more to protect lung health.
We will be fighting for a world where everyone can breathe with healthy lungs, this will include policy work on a whole range of lung conditions, including asthma, COPD, and the impact of COVID-19. But we also want to do more to address the huge underlying issues facing people with all lung conditions and holding back progress on lung health.
We’re calling on politicians to join the fight for breath
We’re calling on the UK Government to triple funding for respiratory research to £150 million. We also want to see local and national policy changes to drive down smoking rates, reduce air pollution, increase vaccine uptake, and tackle the underlying causes of health inequality. And we’ll be pushing health systems across all UK nations to make early and accurate diagnosis and high-quality care a reality for everyone who has difficulty breathing.
We will bring together all those affected by lung conditions to make sure their voices are heard by decision-makers, and we won't stop until lung health is given the same priority as other conditions.
